Ph.D. Program In Finance

Overview

Major advances have been made in the field of finance in recent years. These advances encompass all facets including theory, empirical research, and the development of analytical tools for solving practical business problems.

The Ph.D. program in Finance at Texas Tech University prepares doctoral students to become highly proficient in all of these facets within his/her area of specialization. Students in the program are acquainted with advanced training in theory and research methods, preparing them to make significant contributions to academic research. The program's primary objective is to train doctoral students to be academic scholars and for a career in university teaching, research, and publication of original research.

Doctoral students will complete 21 hours in a finance specialization and also course work in two supporting fields (typically economics and statistics). In addition to course work, students will be exposed to the latest research from leading scholars from other universities through our departmental seminar series.

The Ph.D. program in Finance at Texas Tech University is a full-time program. Doctoral students typically take 9-13 hours per semester and are required to be continuously enrolled from the start of the program until graduation. A student that fails to enroll for three consecutive semesters (including Summer) will be dropped from the program and must apply for re-admission and pay a new application fee.

Application Procedure

Applicants are reviewed for admission each Summer semester. (New students first class is Fin 6331, which is offered during Second Summer Semester, typically starting in early July.)

There are two applications that must be completed, one to the Rawls College of Business and one to the Texas Tech University Graduate School. Applicants are required to take either the GMAT or GRE exam--although the finance department has a strong preference for the GMAT exam.

The Rawls College of Business advises students to apply by February 1 for Summer admission. The finance department plans to start their initial screening of applications immediately after February 1 and to send letters of acceptance shortly thereafter. Late applications will only be reviewed if there are available spaces. Therefore, to receive full consideration, applicants are encouraged to make sure that their application file is complete and forwarded to the finance department prior to February 1. (The finance department will send you an email confirming receipt of the completed application file.)
